Lower shelves usually are easily accessible. To be more effective, you can build a bookcase, which lacks the lower shelves instead. It can either go behind the bed, like a normal headboard, or straddle head of the bed, even if it means that you will lose more inches in length on the bed. You can also build a short, three-shelf bookcase at the end of the bed for a matching footboard.
To do headboard reading light you must attach the light. One of the easier ways to add a reading lamp is to put a lamp on a shelf or shelves above your bed. Gooseneck lamps, which have flexible neck and adjustable light, are ideal for this. If you have a single shelf that is too high practically hold a lamp or if the lamp does not fit well on a shelf, you can try adding a shelf to the side just for the lamp. You may also be inventive and attach the lamp to the side of a shelf or on the underside of a shelf. If space is a problem, consider headboard reading light that is flusher with shelves, such as a flat touch light.
